So if they had thick thick hair (so thick that it stands up on it's own). will it eventually get thin and lay down even when it's short?

No, observation tells me that it tends to run in families ( Genes) and those who are over stressed.

No! My man %26amp; his Dad both have VERY thick hair! His Dad even lost it all when he had cancer %26amp; it all grew back just as thick as it was!! They are Greek!

My step-father died with all his hair and his sons are in their 50's now and loosing hair and going bald. The women keep all of their hair and so some do and some don't. Take your pick it will happen to some and not to others.
