What food have you been feeding him? Make sure you are feeding a high quality food. Here's a good site to research that.

Other than that, all you can do is talk to the vet or the breeder of the dog.

Added: One answer said it;s normal - it's not. Puppies should not have thin fur. It is a sign of something and needs to be addressed.

don;t freak out,

it's puppy hair, an outer coat will grow over it. YOur dog could just be a "late bloomer". One of my dogs never got rid of her puppy hair. There is nothing wrong with it, it's just a different texture. Everything will be fine, if your dog does not grow thicker hair it's no big deal, its just something that makes your dog uniique

At 7 months they go through an "ugly" stage.

All dogs do, sort of like losing baby teeth and getting adult ones.

He's getting his adult coat.

BUT!!

Nutrition has a lot to do with it.

Read labels.

NEVER feed corn, wheat, soy or milk. Beef and chicken are allergens for some dogs, consider switching him to a food with lamb and rice. Turkey and fish are good choices for dog food flavors too.

Look into Innova, California Natural, Canidae (I recommend), Wellness, and Artemis. All are great, all have websites.

California Natural Skin and Coat Supplement works wonders. www.naturapet.com for more info.

Ark Naturals has a whole line of supplements. No matter what you're told, dogs need vitamins too. www.arknaturals.com

bet you bought him from a pet store, right? this sounds suspiciously like a geneticly deficient puppy-mill dog. if that's the case, I don't think there's much you can do. genetics is genetics. I know, because once I bought a poodle that turned out to be from a puppy mill, and she was a genetic disaster. she should have had a life-span of 18 years, and I had to put her down 2 years ago, when she was just 9.

Thin fur can be the result of a thyroid deficiency. This is very easy to deal with through the use of inexpensive medication such as thyroxine. If your vet has not already done so, have your pup undergo appropriate blood work and urine testing. If your vet did not recommend such tests, please consider getting yourself another vet.
